Get Outside Before Summer Crowds Arrive
May might be the best month of the year for outdoor time in Fairfield County.
The weather is warm enough to enjoy the shoreline again, but many of the beaches, parks, and trails still feel calm before peak summer season begins.
Spend an afternoon at Sherwood Island State Park in Westport, hike through Devil's Den Preserve in Weston, or walk the gardens at Bartlett Arboretum & Gardens in Stamford.
For something a little different, TreeTrails Adventures offers nighttime climbing and ziplining experiences that feel especially fun once the weather turns warm again.
This is also one of the best months for kayaking and paddleboarding around Norwalk Harbor before the busiest boating weekends arrive.
See Fairfield County in Bloom
Spring blooms are still putting on a show across Fairfield County throughout May.
The Colorblends House & Spring Garden remains one of the area’s most beautiful seasonal outings through May 10, drawing visitors from across Connecticut every spring.
You can also visit the “Home Sweet Home” Spring Flower Show at Fairfield University this month or simply spend time walking through downtowns like New Canaan, Westport, and Greenwich while everything starts blooming again.
This time of year feels especially beautiful across Fairfield County.
Book a Waterfront Dinner or Outdoor Cocktails
Outdoor dining officially feels back in May.
Some local favorites for spring dinners and drinks include:
-
The Whelk in Westport
-
Rowayton Seafood in Norwalk
For a later night out, places like 29 Markle Court in Bridgeport bring a more tucked-away cocktail bar atmosphere that feels especially fun once warm evenings return.
There’s something about golden hour near the water in May that makes even a casual dinner feel memorable.
Memorial Day Weekend Across Fairfield County
Memorial Day weekend brings some of the most meaningful community traditions of the year throughout Fairfield County.
Parades and ceremonies take place across towns including Fairfield, Westport, Wilton, Ridgefield, Darien, Norwalk, Stamford, New Canaan, Weston, Southport, and beyond.

Why May Feels So Special Here
The patios fill up again. Windows stay open later. The beaches slowly come back to life.
And suddenly Fairfield County feels fully awake again after winter.
Some of the best days this month aren’t heavily planned. They’re the afternoons that unexpectedly turn into dinner outside, live music drifting through town, or staying out later than planned because the weather finally feels perfect again.
