Where the Blossoms Are This April

Where the Blossoms Are This April

Connecticut Living · Spring 2026  | April 3, 2026 · 6 min read · Fairfield County

A guide to the best cherry blossom spots in and around Fairfield County — from your backyard in Stamford to a full day in New Haven.

There is a narrow window every spring — sometimes just ten days — when the cherry trees hold their breath before letting go. Petals drift like pink snow, the light seems to soften even on gray afternoons, and even a parking lot errand becomes, briefly, worth stopping for. If you live in Fairfield County, this April you have no excuse to miss it. The blooms are here, and they are spectacular.

Connecticut's cherry blossom season is in full swing this month, and the options range from a quick riverside walk ten minutes from Trumbull to a half-day pilgrimage up to New Haven for a festival that turns a neighborhood square into something out of Kyoto. Here is where to go, and when.

"The largest cherry tree grove in New England is less than twenty minutes from your door — and it has a name."

Mill River Park in Stamford is the undisputed local headliner. The Nojima Cherry Tree Grove — named after Stamford's Japanese sister city — makes up the largest concentration of cherry trees in New England, and the park has been running guided public tours through May 3rd this year. It is worth it: the trees line the river in overlapping canopies, and in peak bloom the reflection off the water doubles everything. Go on a weekday if you can; crowds stay manageable in the evenings. Free parking alongside the park, open until 10pm.

A shorter detour, and easy to miss: Binney Park in Old Greenwich sits in its historic district and is in peak bloom all month. The pond setting — bridges, turtles, ducks — makes it feel more like a countryside estate than a Fairfield County public park. Open around the clock, and the surrounding neighborhood is worth a stroll before or after.

If You Are Making a Day of It

New Haven has two compelling reasons to make the drive north this month. The more festive option is Wooster Square on April 19th, where the annual Cherry Blossom Festival gathers around 72 Yoshino cherry trees that ring the park's perimeter. There will be live music and food. Frank Pepe's Pizzeria — one of the most storied pies in New England — is around the corner, so plan accordingly.

The quieter option is the Yale Campus Cherry Walk, which runs all month near Branford College. Gothic stone buildings and flowering trees in the same frame is a combination that rewards a slow pace and a good camera. Pair it with nearby Edgerton Park for greenhouses, a community garden, and an atmosphere that rewards lingering far past your original plan.

For something a little different: Hubbard Park in Meriden adds cherry trees to a late April Daffodil Festival, and the park also has Castle Craig — a stone tower you can hike or drive to for views over the Meriden valley. An hour from Trumbull, but makes for a proper spring outing.

The window is short. Even in good years, peak bloom lasts a week or two before a single warm rain strips the trees bare. This weekend's forecast is worth checking — and then going.
